Community Service

Our BAS Pack of Dogs do a lot of community service.  Many times students and families will see them out and about in the evenings and on weekends.  They attend many sporting events and fundraisers.  Recently, Shadow and his Pack helped to promote our BAS Pink Week.  They participated in activities all week long, and attended the BHS Varsity Football Game.

Shadow also attending the MS Walk in Milford to support a very special Brighton Family, and he attended the Alzheimer's Walk in Brighton to support many special Brighton Families.  Everyone loves seeing them at these events!

New School Year with our Hero

We are so excited to have Shadow starting the school year with us!  He has been instrumental in helping students transition back to school, especially those who are struggling with anxiety.  Before school you may see him hanging around by the Kindergarten doors.  This is a new post for him.  He has been helping our youngest learners transition into the building, ready to start their day!

Shadow also spends most of the morning working with students who need extra support.  Students may sit and read to him, or they may sit next to him while they are doing their work.  He also takes movement breaks with some students.  He works really hard for his students all day long!

At the end of each day, Shadow escorts our JK and Kindergarten students out to the buses.  When he reaches the sidewalk, he's able to say goodbye to his students each day.  We are so lucky to have him on our Staff!

Building Special Bonds with My Students

Shadow is continuing to make a huge impact at school.  He spends his days being their for students who need a friend, or if they are struggling in some capacity during the school day.  He also visits classrooms to help them concentrate on important curriculum.  Below is a fantastic article that was just published about our very own BAS Pack of Dogs, and Shadow, along with some of his Hornung friends, was able to participate in the interview.  Enjoy this great read!

Getting to Know my School Family

This week I spent a lot of time in more classrooms, and more students came to visit with me when they needed a friend.  It made me feel special, and I worked really hard to be there for them!  Some of the times that I helped in the classrooms was during:

  • Math Blocks
  • Writers Workshop
  • Readers Workshop
Some of my friends that came to visit me might have been having a hard day, they may have been sad about something, they may have been worried about something, or they just wanted to be near me.  They were able to sit with me and read to me, work near me, or just pet me and say "hello".  My Hornung Family is very kind and loving!

My 1st Full Week of Work

This was my first full week of work at Hornung, and I worked hard to do my job for my students.  This week I spent my time visiting with students in the Library, in classrooms, the office, Music Room and in the Gym.  My Hornung School Family is so generous!  I have a nice soft bed in every classroom to rest in while I am working with my students.

When I was working with my students this week, some of them sat by me and gave me a gentle pet.  I hope that is helped make them feel safe and calm.  And, it was really nice when some students read to me.  I hope that it helped them become better readers by reading out loud to me!

I had some nice visits with students who were struggling or having a hard day.  It made me feel good to have them visit, and I hope it made them feel better after spending some time with me.  I love my School Family!       ❤🐾~Shadow

Training my Students & Staff

It has been an exciting few weeks at my new school!  I have been working hard to train my students and staff on what my job is, and how I can best help them to be successful at school.  I can help my students without saying any words, help them feel safe at school, help them read by listening to their stories, help them concentrate on their work when they feel anxious, and help them feel special by being their friend.  They know where to pet me, how many students can work with me at a time, and how I am supposed to behave in their classrooms.

I spent an entire day with my pal, Duncan and my Trainers to work on getting them ready for me to visit classrooms to work with my students.  They learned about how I was trained, what services I can provide to my students, how to handle me, and what I am supposed to do when visiting their classrooms.  They were able to get hands-on training with me.  It was a great day!

My school family is so wonderful!  I can't wait to start working in classrooms!

I moved home!

I am so excited to have moved to Brighton!  I have worked really hard with my training, and I am excited to start working at Hornung!  I am still a puppy, so I will make some mistakes, but I learn quickly and I will keep getting better at my job.  Right now I am transitioning into my new home and work.

My host Mom, Mrs. Richards, takes me for walks every morning before school so that I can get my energy out and focus on my job.  I am very athletic by nature, so I need this exercise and I enjoy my walks.  And, as a Labrador Retriever, I am great at helping people.  This will make me a great social emotional therapy dog for Hornung!

I can't wait for all of my school family to go through their training, so that I can start working with them on a daily basis!  Lots of love,  Shadow  🐾
